Gambler made up robbery story to hide losses
A MAN who claimed to have been robbed of 30,000 yuan (US$5,000) made up the story to cover up gambling losses, Shanghai police said on Tuesday.
In a call to police around 9pm on January 24, the man surnamed Liu said three men robbed from him after threatening him with knives on Datong Road in Jinshan District.
But surveillance cameras showed no robbers, only Liu walking home carrying a plastic bag.
Liu admitted that he faked the robbery to escape questions from his family about the 20,000 yuan he lost that evening gambling.
He was detained for five days for wasting police time.
