Gambling den in apartment busted
AN organized gambling den hidden in a residential complex has been busted in downtown Changning District, police said yesterday.
District police said 11 suspects were caught with 48,000 yuan (US$9,591) in cash and 81,400 gambling chips. Neighbors were complaining about loud noise at night in a 15th-floor apartment on Tianshan Road. Officers found a couple with no job or visible means of support were renting the four-room apartment for 8,000 yuan per month. In a visit to the apartment, police officers were told by the couple that they did not need to pay the rent as the apartment was owned by a friend and "friends often dropped by for chatting." An organizer, surnamed Ji, admitted to police that he rented the apartment and hired the couple to stay and look after the gamblers.
