Gang members held for moped robbery

SEVEN young people aged between 15 to 21 have been charged with robbery for allegedly robbing people of their mopeds in downtown areas, Jing'an District prosecutors said yesterday.

The gang, including three minors, committed four robberies in the space of two weeks, stealing six mopeds and injuring two people, prosecutors said.

Zhang Jun, 21, the oldest and the head of the gang, assigned jobs to the members.

A 19-year-old young man was responsible for hot-wiring the mopeds so that they could be driven away and a 15-year-old was in charge of opening the locks. Others acted as lookouts during the robberies.

Zhang was in charge of storing the mopeds and selling them on, prosecutors said.

Zhang ordered his gang members to threaten people with knives if anybody tried to stop them, according to the prosecutors.

On March 4, a local man parked his moped outside a food market and went in to meet his friend. Some time later he happened to notice two young people unlocking his moped.

When he tried to stop them, he was attacked and stabbed and other passers-by were also threatened with knives.
