Gas explosion injures 8 in Songjiang
EIGHT people were injured in a gas explosion in a security guards' room in Songjiang District at 11:30am yesterday.
Three of the victims who were in the room at the gate of a neighborhood on Laifang Road suffered severe burns and were being treated in hospital last night.
An underground gas leak is believed to have been the cause, although investigations are ongoing.
The blast damaged the security equipment in the room, blew the doors off and smashed its windows.
Four guards in the room were knocked to the ground and four residents passing by were hit by flying glass.
The victims were sent to Ruijin Hospital. Five suffered minor injuries and bruises.
The three guards who suffered burns to their faces were transferred to an intensive care ward at the hospital for observation after treatment, doctors said.
Neighbourhood management members said the guards had smelled gas before the explosion but paid little attention as there was no gas supply in the room.
After the blast, police set up barricades to prevent people coming too close. The road was dug up and gas company repairmen were searching for leaks. They said underground gas pipes were at risk of cracking because of the cold weather and uneven subsidence.
A leak could have led to an accumulation of gas in the room that could have been ignited by a spark from the security monitoring equipment, the repairmen said.
