Gas station shut down after fire broke out at storefront only 50 meters away

A fire broke out at an empty storefront, which is only 50 meters away from a petro station in Hongkou District around noon, local fire control authorities said.

The 10-square-meter storefront at the ground floor of a building on Gaoyang Road used to be a welfare lottery outlet but was vacant when the fire started around 12:20pm, a fire control official told Shanghai daily.

Nearby store staff tried to put the fire out with portable extinguishers but failed.

Firefighters arrived soon with two fire engines after receiving the report and put it out with three fire hydrants around 12:40pm.

Though no one was injured, a petrol station only 50 meters away was temporarily shut down to prevent worse consequences.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
