Gay sex major transmission channel for local student HIV infections: authority
THE number of students with HIV infection keeps rising in Shanghai in recent years with gay sex found to be the major channel for HIV transmission among students, officials from Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission said today, ahead of the World AIDS Day.
The city reported 92 cases of student infections so far this year, rising by 31.4 percent from a year earlier. They make 4.7 percent of all the new HIV/AIDS cases reported this year. And 88 percent of the newly discovered student patients get infected through gay sex.
Shanghai registered 1,975 people being infected with HIV, including 743 AIDS patients by November 20 this year, while 151 death cases were reported. The number of new HIV/AIDS cases grew by 10.8 percent and AIDS patients grew by 17 percent from the same period last year.
“Though cases of HIV carriers keep rising in Shanghai for years, we had managed to keep the growth rate at a speed of 10 percent annually,” said Wang Panshi, vice director of Shanghai Health and Family Planning Commission. “The epidemic situation of HIV/AIDS is still in a low prevalence in Shanghai.”
Sex is the main transmission channel of HIV/AIDS in Shanghai and 97.5 percent of this year’s newly reported cases were related to sex intercourse. Gay sex was confirmed in 66 percent of the sex-related HIV infection cases.
Men make 91.3 percent of the new HIV/AIDS cases this year with men aged between 18 and 54 taking the majority, the commission reported.
