Girl, 4, beaten to death, mom a suspect
LOCAL police detained a woman yesterday for allegedly beating her four-year-old daughter to death in suburban Baoshan District.
The girl, surnamed Guo, was pronounced dead on Wednesday night while she was rushed to hospital. Doctors said the girl had bruises all over her body and they called police immediately.
According to Baoshan police, the father said he found his daughter injured and lying on the ground when he got home at night. He sent her to hospital.
Neighbors said the mother has a long history of beating the girl, who they sometimes found with bruised eyes and legs.
The mother, surnamed Hu, 26, is an Anhui Province native and the father, 28, is from Shandong Province. They came to Shanghai three years ago and sell cooked food in a nearby wet market.
The girl was their only child. Neighbors said the mother strongly favors boys and always finds an excuse to beat the girl.
A neighbor surnamed Tang said the girl was lovely and understanding. She helped her mother take care of the cooked food stall. "I saw her mother lock her outside the door in winter," Tang said.
Many online commenters said the mother should face serious punishment.
Local lawyers said a person can face at least 10 years imprisonment if injuring a person intentionally, resulting in death. If the injury is the result of negligence and causes a death, the person faces at least three years behind bars.
"In most cases of parents beating their children to death, they usually don't want to kill the children intentionally," said Liu Chunquan, who is a lawyer. "Many people place blame on China's law, for being too lenient to such brutal parents, but the problem lies in law enforcement."
