Girl, 4, kidnapped and killed in city
A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl was kidnapped and killed on Friday in Shanghai's Baoshan District, police said yesterday.
The girl, surnamed Sun, was found dead in a creek near her residence on Friday night, police said.
Officers said they captured a suspect, surnamed Guo, 16, on Friday night.
The Jiangsu Province native was the family's neighbor.
It's the second kidnapping-murder case in the city in the past month. Another four-year-old girl was killed after being kidnapped by two young men and a juvenile in suburban Songjiang District on November 20.
Sun's parents, from Anhui Province, rent an apartment in a residential community in Baoshan. They run a small stall selling breakfast foods and other snacks.
They almost fainted after hearing the news of their daughter's death.
"How can I live without my daughter," Sun's mother cried.
The parents leave home around 4am every day to run their business and they would leave their daughter at home alone.
On Friday morning, they were told by relatives that their apartment door had been broken soon after they left for work.
They rushed home only to find their daughter missing along with a bank card.
The father called the police. Within 30 minutes of arriving home, the couple received a call from the kidnapper, who demanded the family tell him the password for the stolen bank card.
"You have only 10 minutes," the man threatened over the phone, according to the girl's father. "Or I will sell your daughter."
The police caught the suspect about 8pm on Friday.
However, the girl had been thrown into a creek, police said. Officers later recovered her body.
Sun's father said their neighbor didn't work regularly, but other than that he didn't know him very well.
Police said they are still investigating the case.
