Global experts meet in Shanghai to discuss new philanthropy model

More than 100 government officials, corporate representatives and philanthropy experts gathered in the city today to discuss establishing a collaborative philanthropy model that brings together companies, governments, charities and other parties.

With widening social inequality, shifting demographics, high youth unemployment, worldwide economic uncertainty and considerable regional differences, a collective model is a very good idea to further develop philanthropic work, said Brian A. Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way Worldwide, at the 2014 United Way Shanghai Collective Impact Summit.

Wang Zhenyao, dean of the China Philanthropy Research Institute at Beijing Normal University, said a united approach is necessary in China.

Delegates also shared ideas on how companies can play a leading role in addressing China's social challenges.

An example of the collective philanthropy model about daycare centers for the children of migrant workers was discussed. The project launched by the Shanghai Charity Foundation will fund construction of 60 daycare centers and benefit about 6,000 children aged between three and six years old.
