Government program to install home fire detectors in old houses paying off

EIGHT home fires were prevented during recent three months thanks to a government-supported program to install free smoke alarm system in some neighborhoods in Minhang District.

The district fire department said Wednesday that households in 87 blocks of 12 old residential communities have been equipped with the smoke detectors.

Home fires accounted for 43.8 percent of the total fire cases in the district over the past three years, while most of them happened in aged residential buildings, authority said.

This is also the first time to set up wireless fire alarm network in local neighborhoods, authority said.

In a recent case, an elderly woman, surnamed Xu, was alarmed by the device and prevented a home fire, the authority said. She fell asleep in the living room while she's cooking something. Xu wake up after hearing the alarm and found her kitchen was full of smokes. The pot was already on fire, which was about to spread to other places. She managed to react in time to prevent a damaging fire.
