Government to investigate fatal crane accident
The city government has set up a task force to investigate the collapse of a 10-ton crane crash that killed four workers and injured three others, it announced today.
The investigation task force, headed by the city's quality and technical supervision authority, consists of officials with the public security bureau, construction commission, safety production and the trade union.
On Wednesday evening, a 10-ton gantry crane working on the Shanghai-Beijing express rail project site in Jiading District collapsed onto another crane, killing four workers who were sheltering from heavy rain in the operator's compartment. Three people escaped injured.
An official with the local construction quality watchdog said the strong wind may have played a part after an emergency meeting at the construction site soon after the accident.
Workers on the site said most of the victims came from Jiangsu Province.
A worker surnamed Ge told Shanghai Daily that one of the dead was a leader of the team which was supposed to assemble one of the two cranes.
Initial construction for the project started in December and is scheduled to finish by the end of 2010.
