Greedy cabbies suspended
THE local transport watchdog suspended five taxi drivers for turning down passengers after 10pm in the latest crackdown this week.
The five were suspended for 15 days and were fined 200 yuan (US$29), the Shanghai Traffic Law Enforcement Team said yesterday.
At 11pm on Wednesday, a transport watchdog night patrol found a driver who refused to take local passengers at the intersection of Xizang Road M. and Nanjing Road E.
As soon as a foreign visitor hailed the taxi, the driver offered his service for a higher fare. The driver, from the Shuhai Taxi Co, was penalized immediately.
Four other taxi drivers were fined for the same reason the next day.
The authority said some drivers turn down short trips and ask for higher fares at night when it is hard to find cabs.
