Green subsidies for old cell phones
SHANGHAI phone buyers can now do their bit for the environment when they replace their old mobiles.
A leading home appliance retailer has expanded a government subsidy scheme to mobile phones on a trial basis – it will offer 10 percent off new phone prices and recycle the old ones, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
The expanded program has proved popular – Suning Appliance Co says 30 percent of its mobile phone buyers have opted for the subsidies, with about 500 old phones collected every day, the newspaper said.
China has launched a stimulus plan to encourage consumption by offering discounts on new appliances, at the same time protecting the environment by recycling old items such as air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines and computers.
