Gun battle sparked by dealers' debt spat

A GUN fight between two drug trading gangs last year in Putuo District, in which two died and two were injured, was caused by drug dealers' debt dispute, local prosecutors said yesterday.

Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office has brought charges against 11 ring members for crimes including illegally making guns and bullets, transporting and trading drugs, disturbing the social peace, obstructing the police from performing duty, murder and group fighting.

Prosecutors said Liu Xiaohua, head of the gang from Fujian Province, even grabbed a police officer's gun and pointed at an officer's head when police tried to capture him.

Police seized 15 guns and 247 bullets in the case.

On May 22, Liu and four accomplices, Cheng Yingwen, Ai Daiqing, Zhou Yizhou and Ma Xiaoling, sought out drug dealer Dong Shuang, who owed 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) borrowed to buy 100 grams of the powerful drug, ice, prosecutors said.

Dong had several friends and allies on hand. The conflict flared into a group fight with guns and knives.
