Travel agencies in the city have canceled tours to Hainan and started giving refunds to customers as Typhoon Rammasun approaches the island province.

Tourists already in the province have been advised to remain in their hotels with return flights being arranged soon, travel agencies said.

Shanghai Spring International Travel Service said today it had 210 tourists in Hainan and all of them are staying inside their hotels.

They will return to Shanghai gradually starting tomorrow.

Three flights between Shanghai and Sanya were canceled yesterday and today. Passengers had the option of a refund or rescheduling their trip.

Shanghai Datong Travel Agency said it had canceled a tour group scheduled to fly to Hainan today and they are being offered a refund.

The typhoon is expected to hit Hainan this afternoon, packing winds up to 140 kilometers per hour. Rammasun has already been blamed for at least 40 deaths in the Philippines.
