Hand cut off in mystery attack

SHANGHAI police yesterday were hunting for four men who chopped off the hand of a man and stabbed his sister at an office on Lingzhao Road in the Pudong New Area.

They were also trying figure out a motive for the Thursday evening attack.

Doctors were able to reattach the severed hand of the victim, surnamed Wang.

He and his sister were under hospital care in stable condition yesterday.

The attack took place about 6:10pm Thursday. Four men, each armed with a knife, jumped off their motorcycles, rushed into Wang's office and began attacking the pair, said a witness surnamed Huang.

The men fled the scene about three minutes later, he said.

"There was screaming, and I saw a young lady shouting in the middle of the road," he added.

Yang, who is in his 20s, said he was watching TV when the four men broke in and began attacking him and his sister without a word.

Yang said he had no idea why anyone would want to harm him. He said he worked peacefully with his brother, who owns the business, and never offended anyone.

The office is a liaison point for investment in Shanghai's Fengxian District.
