Hangzhou hands out coupons

MORE than 38,000 Hangzhou Tourism coupon books have been handed out at the Hangzhou Pavilion since the World Expo opened, Wang Xinzhang, deputy director of the Hangzhou Tourism Commission, said yesterday.

The commission plans to distribute 100,000 coupon books at the pavilion.

As of the end of May, the pavilion has received more than 110,000 visitors, or about 4,000 people everyday.

"It has been a very good start," Wang said.

Each coupon book is valued at 400 yuan (US$58.8). It provides favorable prices at the city's 29 scenic spots, including West Lake, the Xixi Wetland, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and Chun'an Qiandao Lake.

The coupons provide up to a 50 percent discount on designated scenic spots.

The coupon book comes with a Ctrip World Expo Tour Hangzhou Card - jointly issued by the city's tourism commission and Ctrip.com. The card offers discounts in Hangzhou's more than 500 hotels and restaurants.

"Known as the backyard garden of Shanghai, Hangzhou warmly welcomes visitors from the Expo and is trying its best to offer them an exciting Hangzhou," said Zhang Jianting, vice mayor of Hangzhou. "The World Expo is an excellent opportunity for Hangzhou to promote its image."

On June 6, Hangzhou will hold its City Day in the city square in block E8, just a three-minute walk from its pavilion.

Themed "Harnessing Five Waters (the West Lake, the Xixi Wetland, the Grand Canal, the Qiantang River and the sea) and Quality Hangzhou," the entertainment includes a variety of performances given by more than 340 folk artists. Expect a dragon dance, lantern rolling, a Longjing tea show and more.

The event will be held at 10:30-11:30am, 3:30-4:30pm and 7:30-8:30pm.
