Heroic guard's family to collect special award
THE family of a security guard, who died on Monday while stopping thieves from stealing a moped in a residential community, will receive a government condolence award in honor of the guard's bravery, police said.
Police will also recommend Xie Kewei, 54, receive an annual city government award to recognize the heroic deeds of residents.
Xie was survived by his wife and a son.
"He did not even have a chance to say something to us," said Xie's son.
The incident happened on Changzhong Road, Baoshan District, when Xie was told by his colleague to stop an alleged theft.
Two men came into the community riding one moped but left with two mopeds, according to surveillance camera records.
Within seconds, one man jumped off his moped while the other ran directly into Xie, who was closing the gate.
Xie died one hour later after suffering a broken skull.
Two suspects were caught yesterday, police said.
