Higher court upholds student murderer’s death sentence

A former Fudan University medical student’s death sentence was upheld this morning after he was convicted of poisoning his roommate, Shanghai Higher People's Court announced.

Lin Senhao, 28, murdered his roommate Huang Yang by putting the toxic chemical dimethylnitrosamine (DMN), which he had stolen from a university lab, in a water dispenser in their dorm. After Huang drank water from the dispenser on April 1, 2013, he felt sick and died of liver failure on April 16.

During the trial and appeal, Lin claimed the poisoning was an "April Fool’s joke" to test Huang's reaction.
