Highway collision claims 2 in Jiading

TWO people died and six others were injured early yesterday when a van rear-ended a truck on a city expressway in suburban Jiading District.

The police said the van was driving at a high speed and the distance between the vehicles was not long enough. They reminded locals to strictly follow traffic rules while driving.

The crash happened about 12am on the Hujia Expressway, police said. The truck was rammed into by an Iveco van about 300 meters from the exit to Jiading. The district traffic police said the head of the van was totally destroyed.

"Three people were trapped in the Iveco and two of them were pronounced dead after the rescue crew brought them out," said Qiao Zhonglin, a police officer. "The other one suffered some fractures."

Other passengers of the van were slightly injured. All the injured, except the one with fractures, were discharged from hospital later.

The force of the collision even pushed the 5-ton truck dozens of meters away with its rear window smashed.

Three people in the truck were injured, police said.
