Historic arcade houses to be demolished despite protection plan

The Huangpu District government kept carrying out a demolishing plan on a cluster of buildings beside a row of historic arcade houses, or qilou, though its owner insisted the houses should be retained and protected.

The buildings on Jinling Road E. near the Bund failed to be listed as protected historic buildings though they have similar architectural style with the nearby gilou, the housing authority of the district announced today.

The five-story buildings from No.450 to 464 along the road will be torn down to give way to the construction of the city’s new Metro Line 14. The area will have a ventilation exit for the Dashijie Station of the line.

The buildings near the Yunan Road had been rented to many different stores and restaurant.

They had the similar style of arcade houses, but the piles to support the upper level houses were obviously modern styled and covered with marble.

Late last month, the row of arcade houses were saved from a wrecking ball after experts and residents asked the government to change the plan to protect the part of the area’s “unique scenery.” The district government soon announced they would protect the buildings.

“I was shocked and rushed back to Shanghai from neighboring district Suzhou during a business trip after hearing the news,” the owner of the five-story building, surnamed Zhang, said.

“I have no idea why my buildings will still be demolished despite the protection plan on the nearby buildings,” he complained to local Shanghai Morning Post.

The buildings will definitely be destroyed as it had no protection value, an official with the district housing authority stated.

However, the authority will rebuild a row of same style buildings to retain the same arcade architectural style of the buildings around this neighborhood, he added.
