Historic building of former Catholic monastery in Xuhui to reopen

AN over 80-year-old former monastery in Xuhui District has restored its original look and will open to the public soon, the district government said today.

The former Catholic monastery now becomes one of the district government office buildings on 336 Caoxi Road N.

The European Classic-styled building was built in 1928 as the major training academy for local clergies. It was suspended in 1955 and listed as a protected historic building by the city government in 2014.

The building was once served as the district prosecutors’ office. Renovation started on the building about two years ago.

The building covering 3,000 square meters kept many delicate inner decorations of the former monastery. The typical pointed arch windows have also been well-preserved.
