Honors for dead, injured police aides
THE police assistant killed and two others injured in a stabbing attack on Monday morning have been awarded honors and compensation for their bravery in helping others in danger.
The relatives of Zhang Aiming, the man who died, will receive compensation of 310,000 yuan (US$45,379), including 60,000 yuan from the covering insurance company.
"We hope the money will help the heartbroken family," said Chen Hao, an official from Shanghai Politics and Law Commission, the group that oversees police assistants.
The two injured men still in hospital in stable condition will also receive compensation.
The commission said that the city had about 30,000 registered police assistants working with police to patrol streets and help catch law breakers, mostly in residential areas and around factories.
Though police assistants were not registered as police staff members, commission officials said all are covered by government-purchased commercial group insurance.
The commission spends more than 400,000 yuan every year on the group insurance, with the ceiling claim fixed at 60,000 yuan.
The commission also raises a fund of 2 million yuan every year to protect and reward people who act heroically for a just cause. The government lends assistance in other areas, for example by helping these people find jobs where necessary.
Police officers have separate entitlements.
Monday's stabbing attack happened in Zhuqiao Industrial Park in Nanhui area just after midnight. The attacker pulled out a knife and fled when the three police assistants and a police officer approached to question him.
The man then stopped and stabbed the three assistants chasing him, Zhang in the chest and the other two in the back.
The police officer was not injured as at the time he was calling for reinforcements.
Ten police officers arrived at the scene and caught the attacker, who was injured in the scuffle.
Zhang died soon after arrival at Nanhui Central Hospital.
Police identified the attacker as a Jiangsu Province resident surnamed Mo, who is still in hospital.
