Hospital must compensate child left with cerebral palsy

A TOP Shanghai pediatrics hospital has been ordered to pay 160,000 yuan (US$23,400) in compensation to a three-year-old boy who was left blind and with cerebral palsy after being treated for a congenital disorder just after his birth.

The boy survived was treated for an enlarged colon at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University in December 2006 but was left blind and with cerebral palsy - possible risks of the treatment, today's Youth Daily reported.

The hospital followed the correct treatment but failed to fully inform the child's parents of the risks so it should bear some responsibility for the accident, the Minhang District People's Court ruled.

But the child's mother has appealed the verdict as she felt the hospital should bear a greater responsibility and pay for the boy's future treatment.

She said the accident has ruined the life of the boy and his parents, who divorced last year over disputes about their son's illness.

The boy shows no reaction on his face, and neither can he talk or walk like other children of his age.
