Hostage drama man sought gun to kill self
THE knife-wielding man who held a woman hostage for more than six hours at a local suburban inn on Wednesday said his intention was only to "ask for a gun from police to shoot himself."
The kidnapper, surnamed Zhang, a 27-year-old Sichuan Province native, was seized on Wednesday evening after two SWAT teams broke into a room on the second floor of an inn in Huacao Town of Minhang District to rescue the woman.
Later, Zhang told police that he didn't know the woman, a member of the inn's cleaning staff who knocked on his room door for cleaning service about 2pm on Wednesday.
"She came to my room, told me that my rent was due and asked me to pay more money. Suddenly I got the idea of kidnapping her," Zhang said at a police station in Huacao Town.
Zhang said he kidnapped the woman not with the intention of seeking money from her family, but only to seek "death" for himself.
"I thought that the police would arrive soon after I abduct the woman, and then I could ask them to give me a gun in exchange for releasing the hostage," Zhang said.
"They (the police) would have to fulfil my wish by either giving me a gun so I could kill myself or simply shoot me to death," Zhang added.
He said he had been working in Shanghai for about six years as a decoration worker with his father and was not lacking in money though he could not get rid of the idea of committing suicide.
He said he first thought of killing himself about two years ago because he found life "too boring".
About two months ago, Zhang left home after quarreling with his family and had been living at the inn since, he told police.
