Hostage drama mystery deepens
A YOUNG woman rescued from her knife-wielding boyfriend last week may face charges of being an accessory to the kidnapping, Pudong New Area police said yesterday.
Police rescued the 19-year-old woman unharmed after her boyfriend, 21, held her hostage for several hours last Thursday on Tongji Bridge in Huinan Town.
But now police say family members from Anhui Province are helping them investigate after a television report alleged the man had demanded 150,000 yuan (US$21,973) from his girlfriend's parents to break off their relationship.
They are now looking into the possibility that the couple may have acted together to stage the hostage drama after her parents called police.
Witnesses said the woman had not run away during the hostage drama, despite having several opportunities.
"If I was her, I would have been able to run away," said a neighborhood security guard. He noted that the man's knife had not been pointing all the time at his hostage.
The couple had been living in a hotel, where police had visited them, for about 20 days before the kidnap.
Hotel workers told TV reporters that the couple had lost a wallet, but they heard the man said he would soon get more money.
