Hotel workers caught in theft of 40,000 yuan
TWO employees of a hotel are detained and another three released on bail after being accused of defrauding the company of nearly 40,000 yuan (US$6,418) by renting hotel rooms and keeping some of the money, police said yesterday.
In August, a hotel in suburban Songjiang District found a 40,000-yuan gap in their account books and not a clue as to why, police said.
After getting the report, police checked guest information and account books and found that some guests paid after negotiating prices but their agreements with the hotel were missing. Moreover, detectives found several times that two individual guests were listed as occupying the same room at the same time.
Through the investigation, the police found that to embezzle the room fee, the suspects, including the foreman, director and lobby manager, took advantage of the rooms sold to group guests with a discounted price. They changed the records of the hotel and made individual guests into group guests and embezzled the price difference of the rooms.
The theft started in the latter half of last year and the suspects were caught recently, police said.
