How To Better Use Underground Space
A feasibility study in preparation for a legislation on the development of underground space in the city is under way in order to better allocate such areas for civilian use, the Shanghai Civil Defense Office said yesterday.
The local underground space coverage, including empty areas, has reached more than 50 million square meters, and how reasonably this space is used would be crucial to Shanghai's future development as the city almost has no more land resources while the population continues to grow.
Zhu Hongchao, a deputy to the Shanghai People's Congress, earlier this year urged the city to draft regulations on the development of underground space.
