Huangpu plans city’s first ‘slow traffic system’

Huangpu District plans to build the city’s first “slow traffic system” that includes jogging and bicycle lanes around landmark venues to encourage residents to take greener forms of transportation, officials said yesterday.

The district aims to get 80 percent of residents out on foot, by bicycle or public buses and subways by 2020, when the system is scheduled to be completed, said Chen Yongliang, director of the district’s development and reform commission.

The system will include lanes for walking and bicycles that link with bus and Metro stations. Residents can use the lanes to both shuttle between home and work or to exercise, he said.

“We also want residents to slow down and enjoy a walk or a bike ride while admiring the city’s beautiful scenery,” Chen told a press conference.

The system will first cover an 8.3-kilometer riverfront stretch from the Bund to Xuhui District, Chen said.

Construction will begin early next year, according to the commission.
