Hundreds of flights canceled or delayed due to thunderstorm

Some 160 flights were canceled and more than 400 were delayed at Shanghai’s two airports today due to a thunderstorm.

The inclement weather began affecting takeoffs and landings at 10am. The visibility was reduced on runways due to thick cloud cover, the airport authority said.

Over 200 flights had been delayed at Hongqiao airport as of noon. Flights FM9264, MU2151, HO1094 and CA1533 were diverted from Hongqiao to land at Pudong airport.

The weather improved in the afternoon around Hongqiao airport although the storm was still affecting flights out of Pudong. Three Shanghai Airlines flights were diverted from Pudong to land at Hongqiao as of 2pm, the airport authority said.

China Southern Airlines issued a flight delay alert at 1pm when 14 of its flights had been delayed by over an hour. The airline asked passengers to call the carrier to check flight information to avoid being stranded at the airport.

China Eastern airlines said the flight delays would continue through the night.
