Hundreds of knockoff laptops are confiscated

MORE than 10 suspects were detained by the police in a scheme to sell brand knockoff laptops on the Internet.

More than 800 laptops of various brands, mostly Apple, were confiscated by the police. The value of the laptops is estimated at 10 million yuan (US$1.6 million), said the Yangpu District police last night.

The suspects' online store on Taobao.com was selling 13-inch Apple laptops at prices from 1,000 to 2,000 yuan while the market price for the real thing is over 8,000 yuan. They soon attracted police attention.

"We first bought one from the store and sent it to Apple Shanghai to check its authenticity," said Ding Xiaomian, an officer at Siping Police Station. "The laptop later turned out to be a total fake."

More than 800 laptops were confiscated, with the suspects led by a man surnamed Peng. Peng said the laptops were assembled in Shanghai with components bought from Guangdong Province and sold through seven online stores and one actual store, police said. The gang could earn millions of yuan every month.
