Husband of star falls to his death

AN award-winning scriptwriter, married to well-known Hong Kong actress, died early yesterday morning after falling from his luxury apartment in downtown Xuhui District.

Deng Yu-Quen, from Taiwan, plummeted to his death from a high-rise in the Wellington Garden complex at Huaihai Road W. about 4am.

His body was discovered among greenery near the apartment by his wife, Leanne Liu. He was 64.

Shanghai police said they have ruled out the possibility of homicide.

Liu was reported to be grief-stricken and made no comment.

The complex has three high-rises and is located next to Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Police condoned off the building yesterday and security guards checked every vehicle entering the complex.

Fans extended their condolences online after hearing of Deng's death.

Deng won the Taiwan Golden Horse Prize in 1976 for his script for the film Victory.

Liu, 51, is famous for appearing in many TV dramas, popular both in Taiwan and Chinese mainland, in the 1990s. These included dramatizations of romance novelist Chiung Yao's work.

The couple became close after Liu had a role in one of Deng's works.

Deng and Liu married in 1999 and moved to Shanghai in 2008.

Liu once said meeting Deng was "the luckiest thing that ever happened to me." In an early interview she said: "He's very talented and romantic."

Friends said they had seemed happy.

The couple had no children. Deng has a daughter from his ex-wife.
