Illegal cabbie runs into officers
AN unlicensed cabbie is being hunted by police after he hit two officers yesterday afternoon in an attempt to escape the traffic law enforcement authorities' crackdown on illegal cabs at the city's Hongqiao International Airport.
One officer was left with a broken leg after he was hit and held onto the vehicle for the kilometer-long chase that ended when a woman deliberately slowed her car in front of the cab, allegedly driven by Yao Quan. Another officer suffered a minor injury.
Yao refused to stop his car for a check at the Hongqiao airport about 2:35pm and sped up despite the blockade being manned by more than 20 traffic officers.
Yao initially tried to avoid the officers by zigzagging but floored the accelerator when he realized the officers weren't put off.
Hou Zhengming was hit by Yao and held onto the windshield wiper to avoid being thrown away from the car.
With Hou hanging on, Yao drove the car recklessly onto the Yan'an Elevated Road with police cars in pursuit.
The cab then ran into a BMW car on the elevated road and stopped.
Yao fled on foot.
Hou was found to have suffered a broken right leg.
The driver of the BMW, a woman in her 20s surnamed Xu, told the Oriental Morning Post that she deliberately slowed her car down when she noticed Hou hanging onto the cab traveling behind her.
Police discovered another plate in the trunk of Yao's car and identified him from it.
