Illegal cabby gets 1 year in jail for switching transit cards
AN unlicensed taxi driver was sentenced to a year in jail and fined 2,000 yuan (US$326) for theft after switching out passengers' transit cards, a local Minhang District court said today.
The driver, surnamed Chen, bought invoices, a taximeter and a license plate illegally to operate a "black" or unauthorized cab, which he drove since 2012 in the wee hours of the night.
He began occasionally switching out transit cards and stole 1,300 yuan in value from them.
Chen was arrested by police on February 18 and more than a dozen transit cards were found in his car.
The court warned passengers to be vigilant about protecting their personal property when taking cabs late at night.
