Imported Hermes clothing returned, destroyed by city watchdog for containing excessive formaldehyde

NINE batches of Hermes clothing made in France failed quality tests for containing excessive levels of carcinogenic formaldehyde, the city's entry and exit authorities said.

The formaldehyde amount on these clothes exceeded the maximum permissible limit under China's national standard and they were checked between January and March last year, the Shanghai Entry and Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau said on Monday.

The clothes were either shipped back or destroyed, said authorities.

Doctors say excessive formaldehyde can lead to headaches, dermatitis, respiratory disease, eczema, scytitis and even malignant tumors and leukemia.

The bureau said it has increased the frequency of sample testing of imported Hermes clothing.
