Inspectors look up and down for safety problems
SHANGHAI authorities will carry out a citywide inspection of elevators and escalators before the World Expo.
Officials are now evaluating older elevators and escalators, in use for more than 10 years. Those with safety problems will be refurbished, said the Shanghai Bureau of Quality and Technical Supervision yesterday.
The evaluation has been finished in several districts. The bureau said Jing'an and Luwan had 239 old escalators and elevators, and almost all carried safety risks.
