Inter to bring on star players

ITALIAN football champions Inter Milan are to visit the Italy Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 to meet their fans. While they're here, they'll also play against local Chinese clubs.

The team is due to arrive sometime after July although some star players may not be able to come because of their involvement in the World Cup in South Africa. But the Italian Expo group would also invite many veteran football stars.

Italy's president, Giorgio Napolitano, and prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, have also expressed interest in attending Expo, Secretary General Maria Sabbatini said at a press conference yesterday.

The city of Milan is taking a special interest in the Expo because it is hosting the event in 2015. Members from the Milan Expo team will be paying close attention to how things go in Shanghai to make their event as successful as possible.

A 250-square-meter Expo area on the pavilion's ground floor will showcase the plans for 2015.

Twelve of the country's 20 regions will hold temporary exhibitions in turns during the Shanghai event.

The Campania region, where ancient Pompeii stood, will showcase its protection of cultural relics, innovative technology and subway system, said Michela De Risi, project manager China of Citta'Della Scienza, the company in charge of the region's Expo showcase.

The pavilion will feature paintings regarded as national treasures, such as work by portrait-painter Lavinia Fontana and abstract artist Alberto Burri. Andrea Bocelli is to sing at the Performance Center on June 2, Italy's National Day.

Some 25,000 to 50,00 people are expected to visit the Italy pavilion each day.
