Italian partners for new innovation center

THE former Bashi No. 1 parking lot on Siping Road will be turned into a modern innovation center that includes a museum, library and artist's studio.

Tongji University signed a joint development agreement with Italian partners, including Italian Innovation Promotion Agency, yesterday.

"Italy has the most innovative design professionals, while China has an increasing demand for design innovation due to economic restructuring," said Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology.

A three-story garage will be demolished to make way for the innovation center.

The university has also built a modern office building, which opened yesterday, at the site.

Solar panels cover the exterior of the building to make use of renewable energy.

The reconstruction of the building was done in such a way as to prevent the release of 8,640 tons of carbon dioxide and preserved 18,000 cubic meters of concrete materials, university officials said.

The innovation center is expected to finish by 2014, officials said.
