Italian planned to wed his gay lover's mother
A LOVE triangle featuring an Italian, a local man and his mother ended up with the European being deported, immigration officials said yesterday.
The 55-year-old Italian man, whose name was not identified, had planned to marry the mother of his lover, the Shanghai Exit-Entrance Administration Bureau said.
However, when he arrived at a local registry, it was discovered that his visa had expired and he was detained for 10 days before being deported.
The Italian came to Shanghai last October holding a traveling visa, met a local man, aged 29, and fell in love with him.
In order to stay with his lover and avoid complicated visa application procedures, he decided to marry the man's mother, a 53-year-old widow, as this would entitle him to long-term residency, said the bureau.
But when the Italian and his lover's mother went to a registry in Huangpu District last month, staff discovered that his visa had expired 80 days previously.
The mother insisted she had no idea her son and the foreigner were in a relationship, as she thought the Italian was her partner, according to the bureau.
But a bureau official told Shanghai Daily yesterday the mother should have known about the affair, as the Italian had lived with her son for some time and neighbors were aware of the arrangement.
The Italian man, a frequent visitor to the city, once worked at a consultancy firm in Shanghai. He had forgotten to renew his visa.
Despite his detention and deportation, he will be able to return to Shanghai in the future, the bureau said.
