Jade collector turns into extorter
A local jade collector who bought imitations and illegally detained the sellers to extort money totaling 2 million yuan (US$316,797) has been charged with extortion, Baoshan District prosecutors said today.
The suspect, surnamed Yang, said he paid 160,000 yuan to Gao Xianwei and his nephew to buy ancient jade pieces last November and December.
Yang grew furious when a friend told him that the pieces he bought were imitations and he detained Gao and his nephew illegally in his house.
Prosecutors said Yang recovered 60,000 yuan and demanded 2.03 million yuan in compensation. He also beat Gao and forced him to take off his clothes.
Yang freed Gao's nephew who promised to borrow money and managed to report to the police.
Gao and his nephew were also charged with fraud by the prosecutors.
