Jail for dad who sold baby son

A MAN has been jailed for three years for selling his four-month-old son for 35,000 yuan (US$5,125).

Zhang Jun, a 25-year-old from Anhui Province, spent the cash in a two-month splurge on dining, entertaining and traveling, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported. He also bought himself a motorbike and computer.

Zhang came to Shanghai in May 2008 and worked as a hotel guard. He fell in love with a colleague surnamed Liu and the couple gave birth to a baby boy a year later without registering for marriage.

The couple soon found it hard to afford his care, so Zhang sold the baby in September to a buyer in east China's Shandong Province.

In December, Zhang's father called police when he found out his son had sold the infant.

Police recovered the baby, the report said.

Zhang was sentenced to three years and fined 3,000 yuan. He appealed against the verdict in Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court which had a second hearing yesterday.
