Japan changes visas for Chinese travelers
Changes have been made to visas for Chinese tourists traveling to Japan.
The income standard will be lowered and the length of stay for each entry will be reduced for Chinese applying for a three-year, multiple-entry visa to Japan, the Consulate General of Japan in Shanghai said in a news release yesterday.
The length of stay for such visa holders will be reduced from 90 to 30 days.
The consulate also said a new five-year multiple entry visa will be introduced to applicants at “very high income levels.”
Three-year visa holders will still have to enter Japan from Okinawa or its 3 northeastern provinces. This requirement will be waived for 5-year visa holders, who will also be allowed to stay in Japan for 90 days per entry to the country.
The consulate refused to disclose the income level for the five-year visa but said it would be more than the old standard for the three-year visa.
It issued about 874,000 visas last year, including a record 721,000 travel visas.
The Japanese Tourism Bureau estimated that 2.2 million Chinese visited the country from January to November last year, up 82.2 percent from the same period in 2013.
