Japanese student assaulted
Shanghai police are asking more witnesses to come forward to help them catch a man who randomly assaulted a Japanese university student by cutting her face with a blade on a crowded downtown street on Friday night.
Yuka Abe, a 22-year-old senior student from Fudan University, said a male stranger suddenly jumped out of the crowd on the sidewalk, punched her in the face and cut her with a blade hidden in his fists.
The assault occurred at about 6:40pm on Friday at the intersection of Fuzhou Road and Guangxi Road near People's Square.
The cut left a wound on her face that required seven stitches. After the wound heals a scar may be left, doctors told STV reporters.
Abe said she was walking to the intersection when the man, about 1.7 meters tall and wearing dirty clothes, approached her suddenly and punched her in the face.
"He knocked me to the ground and I was totally shocked," Abe said. "He has quite long hair, down to his shoulders. The hair was quite dirty and he had whiskers on his face."
She said she had never seen the man before and told reporters that after she was knocked down, she noticed her face was bleeding.
"I assume the man hid the blade in his fists," Abe said.
"I hope the police can catch the man as soon as possible before he assaults other people on the street," she added.
Huangpu District police said they are trying to track down the man by studying video tapes from nearby surveillance cameras.
The police are also asking more witnesses to come forward with clues.
The incident has sparked fear among some residents.
