Jiading apartment blaze claims couple

A COUPLE was killed in a fire at a residential building in Jiading District in the early hours of yesterday, which left another coupled injured.
The incident occurred in a residential area of Lane 99 Qujiang Road in Jiangqiao area, claiming the lives of the middle-aged twosome, who were trying to escape from the third floor of complex No. 36, which was on fire.
Neighbors said the fire could have been sparked by the bulk load piled in the corridor of the first floor of the building. The cause of the fire was still under investigation.
The tragedy happened about 12:30am yesterday while most residents were sleeping. Things piled up on the first floor of the building somehow caught fire and the flames soon spread, neighbors said. The wife of the dead couple who lived in Room 302 saw the flames and tried to put them out with water but failed. She soon woke up her husband and the two tried to escape through the corridor.
But they passed out in the corridor suffocated by the fumes. The rescue team rushed them to hospital where they were declared dead.
Also yesterday, student dormitories at two universities in Shanghai caught fire yesterday though no one was injured.
A fire broke out about 11am yesterday on the fifth floor of the dormitory building No. 8 of Shanghai Normal University in Fengxian District, while a similar situation unfolded about 1pm in a dorm of Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade in Songjiang District.
