Jiao Tong unveils big data research center
A big data engineering research center was unveiled at Shanghai Jiao Tong University yesterday afternoon that is designed to process data in a “high dimensional” way.
“With thorough use of big data, we can monitor the electricity usage of the whole nation or predict how much power a family will used in the next hour,” said Professor Jin Zhijian, vice director of the center. “We can also use it to collaborate with remote sensing and predict major disasters in advance. We can integrate various devices through 5G and lead a real smart life. Big data will also be able to suggest the best response in advance when an emergency occurs.”
He said they have also started a project to monitor the city’s subway network and plan emergency response measures.
The professor said that while big data is a "hot topic," few people are using it in a “big” way.
“We are simply collecting data and analyzing it in a low dimensional space. Low dimensional data mining means you can’t see the big picture. You will have unavoidable information loss and sometimes even get wrong information. That’s why we need to process data in a ‘high dimensional’ way,” he said.
Center officials told Shanghai Daily that data security is and will always be a major part of its research.
