Jilted man gets prison for rape, robbery, kidnap
A MAN who took his estranged girlfriend hostage after raping and robbing her friend has been sentenced to 12 1/2 years in prison, local prosecutors said yesterday.
According to prosecutors, Yan Keyan, a 37-year-old Sichuan Province native, got into a relationship last year with a KTV waitress surnamed Liu. Divorced twice, Yan treasured Liu very much and always tried his best to satisfy all her demands.
But Yan had a gambling habit. When he wouldn't give it up despite Liu's pleading, the woman moved out of their shared apartment and told him she wanted to break up.
Yan went looking for his girlfriend, who was avoiding him. On September 22, Yan went to the residence of Wang, a good friend of Liu, asking where Liu was.
Wang insisted she had no idea. Suspecting that Wang had persuaded Liu to break up with him, Yan raped her and robbed her of a cell phone, cash and a bank card.
After that, Yan forced Wang to reveal the card's code and Liu's whereabouts, Qingpu District prosecutors said.
Learning that Liu was staying at an inn on Huake Road, Yan took a kitchen knife from Wang's kitchen to go to the inn. Along the way, Yan drew out 8,000 yuan (US$1,170) using Wang's bank card.
Yan found Liu in the inn and urged her to go back with him. Police, alerted by Wang, arrived. Yan then put the kitchen knife on Liu's neck, taking her hostage, prosecutors said.
After confronting the police for eight hours, Yan surrendered.
The district court ruled he committed rape, robbery and kidnapping.
