Jobless man arrested for killing, burning mother in rage

THE man who killed his mother two weeks ago and set their home on fire to burn the body has been arrested, Xuhui District prosecutors said yesterday.

The prosecutors called for a psychological check on the man surnamed Lin because his cruel killing over trivia family matters is unreasonable.

Lin, 26, was jobless and stayed at home most of the time after graduating from college in 2007. He lived on his parents' money.

On the afternoon of October 12, Lin asked his mother surnamed Zhao to transfer 30,000 yuan (US$4,491) to his account and was refused. He then quarreled with his mother and threatened to run away from home, the prosecutors said.

Zhao wanted to call her brother to come and witness her son's home-leaving, but was rejected by Lin.

As they grappled, Lin stabbed his mother with a knife and left dozens of cuts in her neck, face and chest. The 56-year-old woman died from massive hemorrhage. Lin then set their home on fire to cover up his crime and fled the scene, the prosecutors said.

His father was away from home at that time. Neighbors called police after seeing smoke coming out of the room.

Lin surrendered himself to police the next morning, accompanied by his father. Lin said he was in a rage at that time.

Neighbors said Lin had often quarreled with his parents about his employment. He was addicted to stock trading and refused to work.
