Jobless migrant jailed for theft and molestation
A migrant worker was sentenced to two years and three months in jail for theft and molestation, a Shanghai court said today.
Zhang Gan, a 24-year-old migrant, was caught by police in February for theft in apartments next to the residential high-rise on Jiaozhou Road in Jing'an District, which was gutted by a deadly fire last November.
Zhang, who was unemployed, made a living in the city by offering male prostitution service and stealing, prosecutors said.
After the November 15 fire killed 58 people and rendered the building into a state of ruins, Zhang decided to try his luck in the two neighboring buildings, the Jing'an District People's Court heard.
On February 24, Zhang entered one building by climbing scaffoldings set up for a renovation project and stole about 1,200 yuan before fleeing the building because his noises woke up some tenants.
Evidence collected at the scene helped police to track down Zhang. They soon found he was the criminal of a molestation case two years ago.
Zhang pleaded guilty in the court and received a light sentence. He was also fined 1,000 yuan (US$155).
