Join us for a visit to a garbage sorting community

SHANGHAI Daily will host a free visit to a garbage sorting community in Jing'an District and a kitchen waste treatment factory in Minhang District on July 14, and those who are interested in how garbage is sorted in Shanghai and its future use are welcome to apply for the trip.

The Minhang Center of Kitchen Waste Reutilization transforms food waste into fertilizer and methane. It processes 200 tons of food wastes within the district every day.

At the center, visitors will see how advanced technology is used to transform urban food waste into an organic fertilizer, which will nourish healthy soil and help with organic agriculture, converting urban organic waste into an agricultural resource.

The Daning community boasts the Lvluo center of environmental protection, which classifies garbage into more than just the two categories of wet and dry. It sets up seven other separate bins for recyclable materials such as paper, plastic, electronics, glass and aluminum cans.

Residents will receive incentives if they throw garbage into the right bins.

At the center, visitors will be able to learn how garbage should be sorted and its potential use.

The trip starts on 8am at 755 Weihai Road in Jing'an District and will last about three to four hours. Free transportation will be organized. Officials with the Shanghai Greenery and Public Sanitation Bureau will answer garbage sorting questions during the trip.

Please send you name, gender, age, occupation, cellphone number and nationality to events@shanghaidaily.com for application. You may also attach 1-2 garbage sorting-related questions. We will inform you as soon as possible whether the application is accepted.
