KFC worker arrested for blackmailing company
A KFC worker who filmed himself spitting in food and threatening to post it online has been arrested for blackmail, local prosecutors said yesterday.
The man, surnamed Liu, was a kitchen worker in Zhejiang Province. He mailed the video to KFC headquarters in Shanghai last November, asking for 200,000 yuan (US$29,287).
Liu, 29, a Jiangsu native, had debts of 20,000 to 30,000 yuan, according to prosecutors.
The tape showed him making egg tarts without wearing gloves, spitting in them and adding other ingredients.
Police said that Liu admitted making the video and threatening the company with it.
Yum! Brands Inc, which owns KFC, confirmed the incident.
